This month marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month in the United States. One family-friendly celebration taking place in Houston is at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts on Saturday, February 21. Black History Month started as a week-long celebration in 1926. But its story began even before that.
In the summer of 1915, Carter G. Woodson traveled from Washington D.C. to Chicago to participate in a national celebration. It was the 50th anniversary of the abolishment of slavery, and thousands of people had traveled from all over the country to see exhibits highlighting the achievements of black Americans.
Woodson had earned a doctorate from Harvard University, and decided to form an organization to promote the scientific study of black life and history. On September 9, 1915 he and four others formed the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, which today is known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
February was chosen because it includes the birthdays of two Americans who played an important role in shaping black history: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Initially known as Negro History Week, the event inspired schools and communities across the country to host celebrations, lectures, performances, and more. By the late 1960s, black college students began extending the event to become Black History Month.
Since 1976, every U.S. President has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. It is a time to honor the achievements and contributions of African Americans in all aspects of life, including art, industry, science, government, faith, and more.
This year’s theme is “A Century of Black History Commemorations.” Among the many celebrations taking place is a free Family Day at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts.

In celebration of Black History Month, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts will host a free Family Day on Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event includes free art activities, story time at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., a musical performance by The Maceo Moran Group at 11 a.m., and a performance by Klein Oak Dance Program at 12:30 p.m.
“At the Pearl, we are delighted to celebrate the many cultures in our community,” said Nicole DeGuzman, director of the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts. “In addition to this month’s Family Day, we have a Day of the Dead celebration in the fall, recently showcased the collection of Andy Moran in our 2025 Fall Exhibition, and regularly exhibit art by local artists whose work reflects their life experiences.”
